Field Management

Organize your agricultural operation with a structured hierarchy: Organization → Grower → Farm → Field.

Understanding the Hierarchy

  • Organization - Your company or team (created when you sign up)
  • Grower - A farmer or producer you work with
  • Farm - A specific farm owned by a grower
  • Field - A specific field within a farm

This structure keeps your data organized and makes it easy to manage multiple growers and farms.

Creating a Grower

  1. Go to Settings or Management (depends on platform)
  2. Select "Growers" or "Add Grower"
  3. Enter:
    • Grower name
    • Contact information (optional)
    • Address/location
  4. Save

Creating a Farm

  1. Go to Growers and select a grower
  2. Tap/click "Add Farm" or "New Farm"
  3. Enter:
    • Farm name
    • Location/address
  4. Save

The farm is now associated with the grower.

Managing Fields

Add a New Field

Option 1: Manual Entry

  1. Select a farm
  2. Tap/click "Add Field" or "New Field"
  3. Enter field details:
    • Field name
    • Crop type (corn, soybeans, wheat, etc.)
    • Acres/hectares
    • GPS coordinates or description
  4. Save

Option 2: Draw on Map

  1. Open the Map view
  2. Tap "Draw Field" or "New Field"
  3. Tap points on the map to create a polygon
  4. Close the shape and save
  5. Add field name and metadata

Option 3: Upload Shapefile

  1. Go to Field Management"Import Field"
  2. Select a shapefile (.shp) from your device
  3. The boundary will load on the map
  4. Add field name, crop type, and details
  5. Save

Edit Field Details

  1. Select the field
  2. Tap/click "Edit" or the pencil icon
  3. Modify:
    • Field name
    • Crop type
    • Acres/hectares
    • Boundary (redraw on map)
    • Notes or metadata
  4. Save

Bulk Field Management

For organizations with many fields:

  • Field List View - See all fields with key details
  • Filter by Grower/Farm - Narrow down the list
  • Search - Find fields by name or location
  • Batch Operations (admin only) - Edit multiple fields at once

Field Metadata

Track important information for each field:

FieldPurpose
Crop TypeWhat's planted (corn, soybeans, wheat, etc.)
AcresField size for scaling observations
Planting DateWhen the crop was planted
Expected HarvestEstimated harvest date
Soil TypeSandy, clay, loam, etc.
IrrigationIrrigated or dryland
NotesAny special characteristics or history

Field Boundaries

Viewing Boundaries

  • On the Map, field boundaries appear as colored polygons
  • Tap a boundary to select that field
  • Zoom in/out to see field details

Editing Boundaries

  1. Tap the field boundary on the map
  2. Select "Edit Boundary" or "Edit"
  3. Drag existing points to move them
  4. Add new points by tapping the boundary
  5. Delete points by tapping and selecting "Delete"
  6. Save

Uploading Boundary Files

Supported formats:

  • Shapefile (.shp, .shx, .dbf) - Standard GIS format
  • GeoJSON (.geojson) - Web-friendly geospatial format
  • KML (.kml) - Google Earth format

Steps:

  1. Prepare your boundary file (must be in projected coordinates)
  2. Go to Field Management"Import"
  3. Select your file
  4. Review the boundary on the map
  5. Confirm and save

Sharing Fields with Team Members

If your organization has multiple users:

  1. Go to Field Settings or Sharing
  2. Select the field
  3. Choose who can:
    • View - See the field
    • Edit - Modify field details
    • Scout - Create scouting reports
    • Manage - Change permissions
  4. Save
